Trigger Point Therapy - The Missing Link In Unsuccessful Back Pain, Sciatica And Pain Treatment

Trigger points are described as hyperirritable spots in the muscles that are associated with palpable nodules in the muscle fibers. The palpable nodules are said to be small contraction knots and a common cause of pain. The trigger points produce pain locally (right where they are) as well as often referring pain to other areas.

Very often the muscles most affected with trigger points are the postural muscles. The trigger point model states that most unexplained pain radiates from these points of local tenderness, suggesting that treatment should be addressed to the relevant trigger points. But before I carry on to further explaining the Trigger Point Theory let's go back in time first to see where this concept comes from.

HISTORY

An American doctor, Janet G. Travell, was responsible for the most detailed and important work. Her work treating US President John F. Kennedyback pain was so successful that she was asked to be the first female Personal Doctor to the President. She published more than 40 papers between 1942 and 1990 and in 1983 the first volume of The Trigger Point Manual appeared; this was followed by the second volume in 1992. In her later years Travell collaborated extensively with her colleague David Simons. A third edition is soon to be published by Simons and his wife, both of whom have survived Travell.

Today, much treatment of trigger points and their pain complexes are handled by Physiotherapist who are trained and experienced in Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Trigger Point Therapists and some other Therapists who are trained in this field. The trigger point concept remains unknown to most doctors and is not generally taught in medical school curricula.

THE TRIGGER POINT THEORY

Trigger points have a number of qualities. They may be classified as active/latent and also as key/satellites and primary/secondary. I will just go on to explain the active and latent concept to avoid making it too technical.

An active trigger point is one that actively refers pain either locally or to another location (most trigger points refer pain elsewhere in the body along nerve pathways). A latent trigger point is one that exists, but does not yet refer pain actively, but may do so when pressure or strain is applied to the myo-skeletal structure containing the trigger point.

Latent trigger points can influence muscle activation patterns, which can result in poorer muscle coordination and balance. Activation of trigger points may be caused by a number of factors, including acute or chronic muscle overload, injury to the area, muscle imbalances and some other less common reasons.

Trigger points can appear in many myofascial structures includingmuscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joint capsule, periost (bone fascia) and scar tissue. When present in muscles there is often pain and weakness in the associated structures.

Trigger Points are often the cause for the development of muscle imbalances, which in return cause spinal and joint mal-alignment. As structures become uneven or excessively stressed a condition of the spine or joint will develop!

TREATMENT

Prior to treatment commencement, the therapist should be sure that the pain patterns they are treating lend themselves to Trigger Point Therapy. If the patient presents with swelling, discoloration, or neurological symptoms, it is always advisable to refer to another health/medical care provider regarding further examination and/or investigation.

Treatment of trigger points may be by Physiotherapists trained in Trigger Point Treatment, Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist and other Therapists trained in this field. If your back pain, sciatica or any other pain treatment has been unsuccessful then it is very likely that the Trigger Point Treatment has been the missing link of your treatment. You are best to find a Health Professional experienced in the Trigger Point treatment concept.

THE TRIGGER POINT SELF-TREATMENT SYSTEM

The Trigger Point Self-Treatment System was developed by an Americanneurological chiropractor who once suffered from low back pain and shoulder/arm pain himself. This system allows you to treat your trigger points in the comfort of your own home, as often as necessary. This is ideal for people who can't afford to see a Health Professional Privately or just don't have the time to regularly make visits to a Professional.

The program's unique, easy to use design helps you completely relax your muscles while you apply only the amount of deep therapeutic pressure needed, to your comfort level. The Trigger Point Self-Treatment System allows you to be in complete control. With the treatment platform design you can simply use your body weight, and completely relax whilst effortlessly melting your pain away.

With just ten minutes a day, you can find blessed relief you probably have not known for a long time. All the trigger points around the body can be pressure massaged away. Nothing could be easier!

Acupuncture - An Eastern Approach to the Pain and Discomfort of Back Pain and Sciatica

According to the clever Chinese doctors of ancient times, back pain is caused by factors in the environment, lifestyle and from the internal weaknesses of the human body.

The environment was always viewed as a potential cause of pain & disease in the human body. Today we prefer to see ourselves as more separate from nature, living above & beyond its effects. However, if you walk around on a wet, cold & windy day without proper covering you are more prone to experiencing back pain in the future. The Chinese believe that windy, cold & damp weather can act as pathogens which enter the body and cause pain.

Also, it is believed that the food we eat if too 'damp' in energy can cause back pain by introducing too much fluid and fat tissue into the body which can then settle in areas which block the free flow of blood & energy. Stagnating blood & energy are believed to be the local cause of all pain in the body.

They also believed that the emotions can cause back pain, because extreme emotions can hamper the free flow of energy & blood around the body, potentially causing pain.

A congenital weakness of the back or old age can also be a cause of back pain. With this kind of pain tiredness is often a problem. In this case it is important to strengthen the back as well as relieve pain, otherwise the pain may reappear repeatedly.

Back pain is treated by inserting fine needles into points situated along meridians on either side of the back. Those points which are tender are most likely to be needled. The points used on the back mostly correlate with the sympathetic nervous system ganglions.

Point on the feet & legs are also used as a way of freeing up the circuit of energy & blood within the meridian. This meridian travels around the body from the eye to the little toe, travelling down the side of the back on the way.

Therapies such as Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy are popular treatments for back pain. Acupuncture is less well known as a treatment, however it has a unique ability to reach nerves lying deep within the muscles of the body.

There can be no better way of influencing and pacifying pain in the lower back & sciatic pain in the legs, than by the insertion of metal needles which have a direct influence on the electro magnetic nerve pathways in the body

Low Back Pain And Sciatica - Should I Rest Or Keep Active?

It's a dilemma faced by many. You have suffered an attack of low back pain or sciatica and do not know whether to rest or keep active. I will now explain the main principles which will help guide you to the right decision.

Fortunately, the days are long gone (with the odd exception) where those suffering with low back pain or sciatica were advised to have bed rest for days on end. This is probably one of the worst things you could do for your pain.

Without doubt, the emphasis is on keeping active. However, this does not mean you need to grin and bear it and soldier on through pain, this could also make things worse. Ultimately, you need to be aware of what your body is telling you and act accordingly.

As the body is healing itself, it is important we do not place too much stress across the injured structures i.e. keep too active, as this will simply interfere with the healing process. I can use the analogy here of trying to run too soon after you have torn a muscle in your leg. If you were to do that, you would not be surprised if you made the injury worse.

However, it is equally important that some stresses are placed across those same structures. This is because the strength of those injured tissues after healing will be related to the stresses they encountered during healing. If all you do is rest your low back/sciatic nerve, the pain may well subside eventually, but it will only be used to 'resting i.e. not doing very much. If you were to then increase the stresses across them significantly afterwards, they may not be able to tolerate this and therefore the potential for re-injury is increased.

Consequently, the important factor here is getting the happy medium between activity and rest.

So how do you know what the happy medium is then?

You listen to your body. If you are placing too much stress across your low back or sciatic nerve, your body will let you know by causing you pain. These pain messages are a warning system for you, that you are not allowing it to heal itself as it would like to. If, however, you allow the body to heal itself by not placing too much stress across the structures concerned, your body will keep quiet and you will perceive no, or very little, pain.

Do not be misled into thinking that it is best to place no, or very little, stress across the injured structures though. As I mentioned above, it is important to place some stresses across them, so they heal stronger.

Therefore, if you have rested and feel your pain is beginning to subside, be sensible, but slowly begin to increase the degree of activity you are performing. If you can do this without aggravating you pain - fantastic, slowly but surely continue to increase your levels of activity as time passes.

If on the other hand, as you begin to increase your levels of activity you feel your pain begin to worsen, you are potentially interfering with the healing process. Therefore ease off back to a level you were comfortable with. Stick with that level for a day or so and then, providing things are going OK, try to gently increase your activity levels again.

As your low back and sciatica nerve become stronger with this approach, it will be important to carry out specific exercises in order to target certain structures. This will enable you to increase strength and improve flexibility. This will result in the pain you are suffering resolving quicker and also the chances of you suffering a repeat recurrence less likely.

Low Back Pain & Sciatica - Getting a Good Night's Sleep

When you are suffering from either low back pain or sciatica, the last thing you want to be doing is laying awake for hours with only the pain for company. Unfortunately that's how it is for many people, especially in the early days when there is still a high degree of inflammation present which is contributing to the pain.

However, it does not always need to be that way. I shall address this very frustrating issue of sleep, or lack of it, to try and help you gain a good nights sleep and to also try and avoid you falling into the trap of thinking you need to replace your bed. Although this can sometimes be the case, it rarely is.

More often than not, if you are struggling to have a good nights sleep, it is likely to be a consequence of either what you have been doing before you went to bed or the position you have been sleeping in while you are in bed which is the problem. I shall be discussing the latter here.

It's difficult to go into great detail, as a lot depends upon what is actually causing you to have low back pain or sciatica in the first place. Nevertheless, there are typically two postures or activities which will tend to aggravate your pain, those being Extension based activities (e.g. leaning backwards) and Flexion based activities (e.g. leaning forwards).

If, when you go to bed, you tend to lie on your stomach and it is extension based activities which aggravate your pain, it is likely your pain is going to be aggravated further during the night. This is because lying on your stomach encourages extension of the lower back. Under these circumstances, I would suggest you try lying on your back of a night (If you do try this, I would also encourage you to place a pillow or two under your knees, because if you keep your legs straight this could also aggravate your pain) or alternatively, place a pillow or two under your stomach if you feel you can only lay on your front

Alternatively, if it is flexion based activities which aggravate your pain and you are lying on you back of a night, this could also lead to a poor nights sleep. This is due to lying on your back encouraging flexion (this is not strictly true, as there are exceptions to the rule. However, for now, we shall take it as true). Under these circumstances, I would suggest you try lying on your front of a night (this time, you may wish to place a small pillow underneath your stomach). Either of these should help you get a better night's sleep.

HOWEVER, if your pain is still quite sensitive, neither of these positions may be very comfortable. When this is the case, I would encourage you to try lying on your side (whichever side you find the easiest) BUT ensure that your top leg is bent slightly at the hip and knee and also supported by a pillow or two. By doing this, it enables your top leg to remain parallel with the bed therefore preventing your leg from dropping down.

It is this 'dropping down' action of the top leg which tends to have a twisting/stretching effect on your lower back and sciatic nerve and will undoubtedly aggravate your pain.

As I mentioned earlier, the sleeping position is just one potential factor which can aggravate your pain at night, but it is a very important one and if you can get this right, a good night's sleep will not be too far away!

Treatment Options For Sciatica Back Pain

Compression of the sciatic nerve causes a group of symptoms which can be quite painful. This pain which starts in the lower back, often radiates down the leg on the affected side to the heel. Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot may progress to muscle weakness and difficulty in controlling or moving the affected limb. Usually one sided, the pain can be debilitating and progressive.  Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. Its roots branch off the spinal cord at the 4th or 5th lumbar vertebrae (L4, L5). Thorough and complete diagnostic tests must be done to identify the cause of the pain. Often a bulging or herniated disc is the cause of the problem. There are 25 vertebrae which make up the spinal column and between each are intervertebral discs. These discs act as cushions, absorbing shock and allowing the spine to twist, turn, and bend. Healthy discs are tough cartilage pads that are thick, flexible, and contain a jelly-like substance. An injury to the back can cause the disc to bulge, rupture or tear, resulting in a herniated disc. When the inner jelly-like material is forced out, the disc gradually flattens, similar to a dry sponge and causes pressure on the nerve.  Treatment is aimed at relieving the inflammation and pain and conservative measures should be tried first. The most effective methods may be a combination of:

Spinal Decompression
Physical Therapy
Chiropractic Treatment
Massage Therapy
Medication including ANSAID drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
Epidural Steroid Injections
Acupuncture and Biofeedback
Electrical Stimulation
Ultrasound Treatment
Surgery as a Last Resort

A treatment method that is gaining favor is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression where recent studies show a 71% to 90% success rate. One study reports that 86% of its participants experienced a complete resolution of their symptoms or an immediate decrease of pain after treatment. Utilizing the DRX 9000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression System, a computerized technology program is formulated to treat the patient's spinal disorder. Through a series of treatments, the spine is gently stretched, slowly drawing the vertebrae apart, gradually reducing the pressure on the affected areas.  Dr. John Leslie, of the Mayo Clinic, presented a study in September 2007 at the annual conference of the American Academy of Pain Management. His study evaluated a group of patients who had suffered more than 10 years of chronic back pain. After two weeks of treatment with the DRX 9000, there was a 50% reduction in the patients' pain. After completion of six weeks of therapy, there was a success rate of 88.9%. As the numbers of patients who are treated successfully with the DRX 9000 grows, it becomes an option that should be considered by those suffering from sciatica and chronic back pain.

Are You Making These Mistakes With Your Back Pain Or Sciatica?

Attention Severe Back & Leg Pain Sufferers Seeking a Cure for Lower Back Pain...

Common Mistakes Made by Back Pain Sufferers

Thinking it will just go away
Thinking that medicine will fix a damaged disc or spine
Thinking that endless chiropractic adjustments will sooner or later fix the problem
Thinking that more exercises or massages will do the trick
Thinking that steroid injections are safe and can fix the problem
Thinking that your only alternative is surgery
Thinking that all spinal decompression therapy is the same

Your Problem Is NOT Going to Go Away...

Severe low back pain and sciatica caused by stenosis, herniated disk, degenerative disc, bulging disc, ruptured disc, slipped disc, foraminal stenosis, failed back surgery and facet arthrosis will NOT go away on it's own. In fact, these conditions are progressive degenerative conditions that only get worse with time.

The Failure of Old, Traditional Treatments...

These back problems are caused by mechanical damage of the discs and nerves...so medicine and shots cannot possibly repair them. You can't put gas in your car to fix a flat tire.

Chiropractic and physical therapy are great for minor low back pain, but they simply cannot repair a damaged lumbar disc. Same for exercises, massage, acupuncture, etc.

The True Dangers of Shots...

Steroid injections are invasive procedures with all the inherent risks of surgery; infection, nerve damage, allergic reaction, failure. The steroids being injected into your spine are toxic. They cause loss of bone mineralization and weaken the supportive ligaments of the spine. Plus... injections do NOT repair the disc. They simply remove inflammation from the area...temporarily.

A Safer Alternative to Back Surgery...

In the old days, surgery was your only option for disc disease. This is the 21st Century! Advances in computerized medical technology has given us safe, effective and quick methods for repairing damaged discs without surgery. It's called Spinal Decompression or Intervertebral Disc Distraction (IID Therapy)

Beware of Wannabes and So-Called Experts...

Many clinics advertise "spinal decompression," but few actually use true spinal decompression equipment. Some use warmed over older traction machines or roller tables and call them decompression. They aren't. And some decompression machines are inferior in build quality and patient features that make treatment more comfortable. Not all equipment is the same. There's a reason why BMW's and Mercedes cost more than Fords or Nissans. It's in the construction and performance.

And not all doctors providing spinal decompression are the same. Some are just general chiropractors with no specific additional training in orthopedics or disc disease. Some have added spinal disc decompression merely as an additional revenue source to their existing clinics.

True spinal decompression specialists, like Dr Barry L Marks, DC have specialized training in spinal orthopedics and have spinal decompression centers dedicated to back pain and sciatica sufferers.

Acupuncture For Relief of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica - An Ancient Eastern Treatment

Despite the fact that acupuncture may not always provide long term relief, it is accepted that it may often be a source of relief from the immediate symptoms of back pain and sciatica. Really acupuncture should be viewed as being a method of alleviating pain and not thought to be a cure. However it should be remembered that pain relief even without a cure is valuable. It is essential for those who are experiencing serious discomfort or worse, and pain relief in itself may create a helpful climate for a cure by other means.

Acupuncture is now well known and accepted in the west although it is regarded generally as a Chinese therapy. It has been practised by the Chinese for several millennia and has enjoyed considerable success although it has not been claimed by them to be an absolute cure. The fundamentals of the therapy are simple. Sterile thin needles are inserted into the body at strategic places and the practitioner then moves them so as to create the necessary stimulus.

The acupuncture positions are not easy to locate, but are important and so require experience on the part of the therapist. Traditional Chinese medicine relate the acupuncture points to theories of yin and yang upon which the effectiveness of the treatment is explained. However it is most likely that the needles when inserted into the skin help to relieve pain by stimulating the bodies own pain relief mechanisms.

It is generally accepted that in the context of back and sciatica, acupuncture does not amount to a cure. Also it does not always work and there are those for whom it is ineffective. But there are very good grounds for believing that it will probably be a means of giving relief for back related problems. Another point to be considered is that the pain relief is normally longer lasting than typical pain relieving drugs available on prescription. Prescription drugs for pain relief will usually have to be taken again within a few hours. Acupuncture has been shown to have a much better effect and this is a great advantage apart, from the fact also that there is no risk of addiction with acupuncture.

Assuming the acupuncture to work for the particular patient, there is then a realistic chance that the easing of pain achieved will in itself lead to better mobility and this will then encourage a cure naturally. It should be added though, that if the acupuncture treatment does not bring about an indirect improvement as described, then probably future treatments by the therapist will be necessary, perhaps as frequently in some cases as every week. This may prove too costly for some.

Safety and hygiene is an essential for the proper use of acupuncture. The needles should always be sterile and are specifically used only once. If undergoing treatment you should expect that the needles will be in sterile unopened packaging before the therapist starts. You will see that the needles are very thin and for this reason you are unlikely to have any sensation of pain as they are inserted into your skin.

In the past the question has been asked as to whether acupuncture does indeed have the pain relief effect that is claimed. Are the claims for the treatment based on an nothing more than the placebo effect? Inevitably where there is incomplete understanding as to how a treatment may achieve its results doubts may be raised about it. It will be reassuring to know that clinical tests have been able to confirm that acupuncture is a genuine means of pain relief for those suffering from back and sciatica pain. And in comparison with the placebo effect, acupuncture has a much higher success rate.

The difficulty with acupuncture remains that as explained it does not amount to a cure. It may help bring about a cure but not always and repeat visits to the therapist may be required. In terms of pain relief then, acupuncture is well worth trying and it may lead to something better. However anyone suffering from back related problems, for example matters such as a slipped disc, which clearly are not going to be put right just by acupuncture, will wish also to address the underlying problem and to see what can be done to correct the malfunction that has brought it about.

Finally do bear in mind that acupuncture should only be given by those who are fully qualified. This is not something to try at home! And nor should acupuncture be tried by anyone who has a problem with bleeding or a blood disorder. Always consult your medical practitioner before undertaking acupuncture.

Low Back Pain, Sciatica and Pinched Nerve Pain - Do You Have Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a condition where for a variety of reasons the spinal canal becomes more narrow. This narrowing can put additional pressure and compression on the spinal cord and can cause a pinching of the nerve roots. If the narrowing is in the lower part of spinal cord it is referred to as lumbar spinal stenosis and if the narrowing is in the upper part of the spinal cord then it is referred to as cervical spinal stenosis. While stenosis can also occur in the thoracic or upper back region, the lumbar and cervical areas are the most common.

Who Gets Spinal Stenosis?

While some people are born with stenosis, most of the time spinal stenosis is seen in people over the age of 50 who already have some disc degeneration just as a consequence of getting older as well as the gradual wearing down on the spine from normal activities. As we get older, our spinal ligaments can calcify, bone spurs may form, and we can get herniated or ruptured discs. All these conditions can lead to a narrowing of the spinal canal which can compress and pinch the spinal nerves.

Spinal Stenosis Symptoms

Symptoms of spinal stenosis can include back pain radiating to the legs, numbness or pain in the buttocks that worsen when walking or exercising, leg weakness, decreased physical endurance, loss of balance, and leg and neck pain.

Spinal Stenosis Treatments

In general doctors tend to take a conservative approach when initially treating spinal stenosis. Drug therapy such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling are usually prescribed first, along with bed rest and reduced physical activity. Steroid injections can also be use to help reduce swelling although the pain relief is normally temporary.

Traction and spinal decompression may be prescribed, along with physical therapy which can be used to help increase flexibility as well as build endurance.

If the pain is acute, then surgery may be needed in order to widen the spinal canal and to correct the conditions that are contributing to the nerve compression.

Some of the surgical procedures used to treat spinal stenosis are:

Decompressive laminectomy. This is used for treating lumbar spinal stenosis and involves removing the top of the vertebra to create more space for the nerves.

Laminotomy. This is a partial removal of the lamina which can be done to widen the spinal canal and relieve compression on the nerve roots.

Foraminotomy. Removal of bone, scar tissue, or other obstructions that are compressing the nerve root exiting the spinal canal.

Due to the risks involved, many doctors will resort to surgical treatments only after non-surgical treatments have been tried first.

This article is not meant to replace the sound advice of a personal physician. Patients should discuss with their doctor all their treatment options before taking any medical course of action.

Back Pain & Sciatica Triggers

When we move, especially doing vigorous exercise, we exert a force which should be carried evenly throughout our whole body. But as a result of even a minor imbalance it that force is distributed unevenly throughout our muscles causing compensations and the imbalance to spread deeper into the body, especially when the body is unhealthy or weak and holds onto its tension. The result is often back pain or sciatica.

Even though at any one time most people have imbalances and therefore the potential to injure themselves it will generally only become a problem and end up a pain episode for people who push themselves beyond their physical limits through such things as an accident, or overuse in their job, sport or lifestyle.

Bending over at that particular angle to pick something up off the floor can be just a bit too much stretch for a muscle in the back that was already too tight and too weak to support the weight or pressure you were putting on it.

This movement can cause the muscle to go into spasm, (a permanent state of contraction) and become irritated at the point where it attaches to the bone. Alternatively it can upset the alignment of a vertebrae causing pressure on a disc.

A good example of this is when a person strains muscles across their lower back by lifting something fairly heavy into or out of their car. The erector spinae muscles (the supporting muscles that run either side of the spine) are often tight already and therefore weak and so the action of trying to support a weight out in front of the body is too much strain on them and they go into spasm.

When receiving treatment, attention normally focuses on the area where the pain is felt. The problem muscles that are causing the pain are left in the locked up condition resulting in a person feeling their back pain every time they sit or bend forward. Sitting and bending requires the erector spinae muscles to relax and lengthen but they are in spasm so they can't. In time the locked up muscles become weaker through a lack of circulation and function and the pain becomes more chronic.

Sciatica and Back Pain - What is the Real Cause?

As tightness builds up in a muscle due to poor circulation, that muscle becomes weak causing other muscles to have to compensate or carry the weight for it. These other muscles then start to overwork, fatigue and tighten up and the odds become higher that one of the joints in the spine will be put under an uneven pressure which will end up causing impingement, pain and inflammation.

The muscle imbalances that set all this up will usually be the underlying problem yet they are rarely considered or treated by most Doctors and therapists.

These imbalances can be confined to one area such as the back or shoulders, or spread throughout the whole body causing a pattern of tight muscles and pressure that eventually leads to weakness and pain.

Some treatments you get for pain will exercise and stretch you until your body compensates sufficiently that your pain goes away but it doesn't remove the imbalances, it just covers them up. You lose flexibility and have a negative effect on the circulation and strength in the body.

When we move, especially doing vigorous exercise, we exert a force which should be carried evenly throughout our whole body. But as a result of even a minor imbalance it is distributed unevenly throughout our muscle system causing compensations and the imbalance to spread deeper into the body. Especially when the body is unhealthy or weak and holds onto its tension.

Even though at any one time most people have imbalances and therefore the potential to injure themselves it will generally only becomes a problem and ends up a pain episode for people who push themselves beyond their body's limits through such things as an accident, or overuse in their work, sport or lifestyle.

Low Back Pain - Sciatica and Osteoporosis - How to Treat It

Osteoporosis literally means 'porous bones', resulting in the bones becoming brittle and the potential for fractures to occur. Any bone can be affected by osteoporosis, but the most common site for fractures are the wrist, hip and spine. I have discussed in another article, "Low Back Pain & Sciatica - Is Osteoporosis the Cause?" what osteoporosis is in a little more detail and how it can present if you develop it in the spine. This article is going to look one of the main forms of treatment for those suffering with osteoporosis... exercise.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the best things you can do to help fight against osteoporosis. I have treated many people suffering with osteoporosis who have mistakenly believed that exercise should be avoided for fear of causing a fracture. This is not true, although you should be sensible and discuss any potential exercise programme you are thinking of starting with a health professional first.

Low Impact Weight Bearing Exercise: This is important for those suffering with osteoporosis as it helps to keep the bones strong. As you perform low impact weight-bearing exercise, and this can be something as simple as a nice brisk walk, subtle increased stresses are placed through the bones (primarily the legs, hips & spine) and the body responds to this increased stress by trying to make those same bones stronger.

Stretching & Strengthening Exercises: Strengthening exercises, although not as much as weight-bearing exercises, will also place stress across the bones, once again encouraging them to strengthen. By stretching, you will be helping to maintain/increase the mobility of your joints and therefore they will be more likely to fulfill their full range of motion when required. This will help to prevent them stiffening up which itself can be a cause of pain.

Postural Exercises: One of the common signs of osteoporosis is a 'stooped' posture, where the curve in the mid-back region becomes increased and the head/chin tends to 'poke' forward. It is this posture which can lead to back and neck pain and not necessarily the osteoporosis itself. Therefore exercises which encourage a more upright posture are imperative. These can be performed in conjunction with the stretching & strengthening exercises mentioned above, as it is important to have good stability and mobility in order to maintain a correct posture.

Balance Exercises: This will not necessarily have a direct influence on the osteoporosis itself. However, if you are at all unsteady on your feet you will be at an increased risk of falling. Falls are, understandably, one of the major causes of fractures in those with osteoporosis. Therefore if you can increase your balance reactions, you will be decreasing the risk of falling and therefore the risk of fractures.

NB No exercises should be performed without consulting your Doctor/Health Professional first.

There are obviously other forms of treatment for Osteoporosis, for example prescribed medication (such as Fosamax & Didronel) and Supplements (such as Calcium & Vitamin D). However, I will not be discussing these here and you should consult your Doctor before contemplating taking any medication or supplements.

In summary, not only is exercise good at keeping you generally fit and healthy, but it can also be an important part of your treatment for osteoporosis. Do not miss out on the ability to exercise simply because you feel osteoporosis is stopping you... it is not. Speak to your Doctor or Health Professional and start a gentle exercise programme as soon as possible.

Discovering the Relationship Between Stress and Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica

Stress is associated with a myriad of symptoms and conditions to include neck pain, back pain, and sciatica. Stress is also responsible for many other disorders of the mind and the body. Hans Bruno Hugo Seyle (1907-1982) is credited by many with being the first to recognize and document the existence and impact of biological stressors. Professor Seyle is often acknowledged as being responsible for much of our current understanding of stress and how it impacts the body.

Furthermore, stress researcher and author demonstrated that stress can be negative, as in what is referred to as distress, or positive, as in what is called eustress; and, that in either case there is a definite and profound effect on the body. Many conditions exhibited by the body are the result of stress, positive or negative. In fact, we now more fully understand the causal relationship between stress and ulcers, stress and headaches, and stress and many other psychosomatic disorders. Neck pain, back pain and sciatica are generally attributed to such things as trauma, disease, illness, and aging when, in fact, in a large number of instances, stress may be and often is the underlying cause.

Neck pain, or cervicalgia, is a fairly common complaint, one affecting two-thirds of the population at some point in their lives. Significantly, neck pain may be caused by a myriad of conditions and/or factors, not unlike the other two expressions of pain in what I refer to as the "back pain complex." Back pain, also known as dorsalgia, generally has its origins in a specific region of the spine. Back pain in the cervical curvature is, of course, neck pain. Pain predominantly felt in the thoracic curvature or region of the spine may be expressed as chest pain and/or upper back pain. And, what we often refer to as a "pain the back," is generally lower or simply low back pain, generally in the lumbar region but may also be felt in the buttocks and legs. Sciatica on the other hand, at times referred to as a type of radiculopathy (at or near the nerve route), may originate at any number of loci but generally at L4 and L-5 or at S1 through S-3. However, sciatic nerve pain may also present itself at any point along the nerve route. Sciatica is, as has been noted in previous articles, a symptom and not an ultimate diagnosis and may run from the lower back down across the buttocks and into the feet and toes.

One thing constant in all three of the above mentioned pain representations is that stress may cause or contribute significantly to the onset and level of any of these "back pain complex" expressions. Neck pain, back pain and sciatica, usually originate in the muscles and fascia, tendons and ligaments, or bones and joints. Of course it may be expressed in several at once, depending on the condition and duration of involvement. In any case, stress may cause and/or exacerbate the pain in any of the three pain expressions mentioned above.

In order to properly understand and treat neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica we must recognize the mind-body link. Stress, being a responsible for any number of possible pain expressions, as well as a number of other psychosomatic disorders, should never be overlooked or its impact underestimated. The link between stress and neck pain, back pain, and sciatica is now a given, the connection undeniable. Yet for years, this link was misunderstood and misdiagnosed because of our limited understanding of psychosomatic disorders and their impact on the body. Seyle's work was instrumental in providing a new, sharper image and understanding of the impact stress has on the body. Unfortunately, even today we see many cases of denial, as it applies to psychosomatic complaints and their diagnoses, due to the stigma attached to anything related to the mind, or psyche. The saying, "It's all in your head" may be true but it still carries with it negative connotations and a negative stereotype.

We often hear expressions like, "Mary is a pain in the neck" or "Jack's a real pain in the back side." Of course, instead of "back side," many use other, more descriptive words or phrases. These are simply expressions with origins in the recognized link between the mind, as in stress, and the body, as in pain. While we often trivialize such expressions, the underlying link cannot, nor should not, be trivialized or denied. Unfortunately, denial is one of the biggest impediments, the highest hurdle any medical practitioner has to overcome because of the immediate defense mechanism slammed into place when someone hears the term psychosomatic.

Unfortunately, the saying "it's all in your head" may be true but until we better understand and accept the link between the two, we are quite often doomed to a kind of "medical test limbo," where everything is tried and nothing works, nothing provides the answers we are seeking. The reason for this being, we have failed to understand the profound impact stress has on the body, in this case resulting in neck pain, back pain, and/or sciatica...or worse.

If neck pain, back pain, and sciatica seem to be present only during periods of high stress, you may consider it a distinct possibility that stress is indeed a factor. How do you know? Ultimately, you don't! However, short of a visit to your family doctor, it may be advisable to begin a program of stretching and exercise.

The exercise program will do two things right away:

One, it will "burn off" some of that stress, replacing the harmful hormones dumped into your system during periods of peak stress and replacing them with natural opiates, known as endorphins. There are also other hormones produced that enter the blood stream during exercise but for the purposes of this article, let's just say they provide an amazing and totally natural high.

Two, it will take you to a place you may have not been in a while, and this place is a journey, not a destination. The journey is known as a healthy lifestyle.

A funny thing happens to people who begin to exercise, they begin to feel better, and then they begin to take care of themselves. This feeds back upon itself, a feedback loop, constantly fueling a healthier and happier state until neck pain, back pain, and sciatica are in the past. Should you ever use heat at any point? NO! I cannot stress this enough! Heat is the absolute wrong thing to apply to a painful neck or back. Take it from someone who has had fifteen major surgeries, fourteen on the spine, and did his doctoral research on the spine and sacroiliac joint. Never, and I mean never, use heat! If you have discomfort, associated with possible inflammation and/or swelling, ice is the only remedy. Ice beats out everything, including anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and NSAIDS.

If it is stress, while it may seem counter-intuitive, ice works wonders in a matter of as little as twenty minutes, a much shorter amount of time than it takes for the average oral medication to kick in. I use an ice-compression brace, just slip in the packet and kick back on the recliner for fifteen or twenty minutes and I'm good to go. A plastic baggie or even a grocery store bag will do in a pinch, just fill it up, wrap it in a thin, cloth towel, bang on it a few times so the ice breaks and there's greater surface area, and you have an ice pack made for the back. Once again, along with an exercise and stretching program, ice is a neck pain, back pain and sciatica sufferer's best friend for beating stress and creating a pain-free lifestyle for yourself.

Sciatica surgery

sciatica surgery is the drastic treatment performed on the untold millions of patient s. who show symptoms of chronic and agonizing unilateral or bilateral sciatica. Lower back and leg pain has reached epidemic proportions, and while there are more treatments than ever, the very of the patient a few seconds to achieve real and lasting cures. In fact, not only are the most sciatica care options as ineffective, but surgical intervention demonstrate some of the worst possible outcomes, and also have a high risk of causing more damage than good.

sciatica surgery specialty is orthopaedic and neurological medicine sectors. There is a wide range of possible procedures used to address the issues of serious and long standing sciatic pain, depending on the source management. The vast majority of patient s, will be lower surgery spinal, because most sciatica complaints are traced back to a structural abnormalities in the regions of the spinal lumbar or l?d?wiowo. Several of the patient 's will undergo cervical spinal surgery, their pain is to put forward the theory, due to stenosis in the neck. Several of the patient s, will be subject to the exclusion of spinal efforts to soft tissue that is the source of the symptoms, such as for piriformis syndrome.

Herniated discs are the most common spinal anomalies, surgically treated in conjunction with the lower body sciatica. While it is possible herniated and bulging discs can actually source sciatica symptoms, actually quite rare. Statistics research indicates little or no correlation between incidence, lumbar herniations and sciatica pain conditions. In fact, clinical research clearly shows that the number of of the patient United's rather nasty looking herniated disks, which are on the unmatched Imaging diagnosis for unrelated conditions, at the same time, many of the seemingly minor problems are accused the drive every day to cause horrific and track the pain. Little sense. If you feel that really awful long-term therapeutic results excluding such as discectomy and spinal fusion is easy to see that the drive is probably not the cause of the pain, but only were wrongly identified as such. This the diagnosis mis is a huge part of iatrogenic error in the rampant care health and is especially huge load of back pain patients around the world.

sciatica surgery you can also treat innocent aspects of aging, including degenerative diseases of the spinal disc and spinal osteoarthritis. I have yet to see DDD, who was really responsible for sciatica, although the of the patient many s are diagnosed only verdict. This is amazing because the disk desiccation is well known medical in the normal, expected, and the public part of the process of aging. Evidence of the process is inherently painful ever reached the final of the lamp. Osteoarthritic changes lower spine is also par for the course and it is normal that people will suffer the typical contract, narrowing the channel central and osteophyte formation of common foraminal to osteoarthritis. I saw many of these cases are the real source of the pain, but this is still only maybe 5 to 10% of the management.

Of course, there are many other structural problems treated surgically, as well as when he accused complaints sciatic changes on diagnostic imaging of films. Some of these conditions, scoliosis, Spondylolisthesis, hyperlordosis, hypolordosis, retrolisthesis and anterolisthesis. In almost all cases of spinal fusion is used to fix the processes in place. All except the back of this specific procedure provides at least hope to solve the pain and in many cases, actually makes the symptomatic expression significantly worse. However, it is appropriate to say that in at least 10% of cases diagnosis, is correct the source of the pain, despite treatment, barbaric, unenlightened and almost giving the effect.

My tips for sciatica surgery is simple. Don't do unless medical emergency approved by at least 3 different surgeons. Not even think about it, unless all other options have been exhausted. Statistics are not on your page. After the damage has been done the same surgical procedure (and Yes, all the way to cause the greatest injury spinal block), may be the chance of ever being pain free again. At least do your own research and actual facts about sciatica surgery. If you like what you read, then by all means, you can still have the operation. However, when you go with him, is no "undo" what is committed against Your anatomy. Think carefully ...

sciatica is also very common pregnancy with. Pregnancy could cause these symptoms for several reasons, especially if you have a problem an underline. One of the reasons for the dramatic changes that occur the pelvis. During the rests oxytocin is naturally released content to allow joints to move more freely pan, prepare the body to the birth of the child. There is a muscle or joint limitations in the pelvis during this time can cause problems in the area of the sciatic nerve. This is a situation where chiropractic care can be very helpful. Chiropractors trained to locate and release of these restrictions, which may cause pain pregnancy you. Many times after delivery of the child, the symptoms usually improve significantly sciatic.

Spine specialists ProRehab deliver hands-on, manual physiotherapy to help patients to reduce or eliminate pain sciatica and avoid surgery. A recent study by the British Medical Journal CITES that patients who had spinal surgery to treat sciatica had only short-term back pain relief. Evansville, IN (Vocus/PRWEB) January 13, 2011

After six months, patients who had surgery for sciatica felt any different than patients who received only physical therapy.

The Mayo Clinic explains sciatica as pain that travels along the sciatic nerve that runs from the top of the back to the bottom of the leg. Sciatica usually ends quickly, but in some patients remains. The British Medical Journal study, patients had the option to start physical therapy or surgery. Patients who had surgery showed improvement for a short period of time after surgery. But for six months and up to two years after surgery, there was no difference between groups with surgery and those who didn't.

"Patients need to know that surgery is not your only option for treating pain associated with sciatica," says Bethany Richerson, PT, DPT, OCS, a physical therapist ProRehab in Henderson, Kentucky. "This British Medical Journal study notes that patients have options to avoid surgery. Physical therapy can produce the same results if patients are able to do it with the first six months of pain. "

The study States that, since the early benefits of surgery, went through six months patients of sciatica well-informed and non-medical, must decide if they have surgery. The results of this study suggest that the expensive treatments for back pain, such as surgery, may not be the best choice for patients. Options such as physiotherapy at ProRehab often times are the best choice for patients with back pain. ProRehab patient comments about your experience in therapy, "" ProRehab physical therapy has made a difference in pain isquiatico relaxing I experienced over the past few years. "

"Several studies show that the first physiotherapists treatments such as exercise and therapy hands-on, offer big benefits to patients," explains Richerson. "Patients see the best results of physiotherapy for back pain are sure to come see us soon. The worst thing to do is wait until the back pain develops in leg pain and becomes a long-term condition. "

When asked about the most memorable experience which took place during the sessions of therapy at ProRehab, a recent Evansville, Indiana patient replied, "will not be able to walk, sit or stand without pain to start my life all around.

Glenn strategies for well-being: understanding sciatica

If you like history, here click to become a fan Facebook Glenn Ellis

* You know what it feels like: shooting pain down her leg. You may also experience tingling or numbness. Your doctor says it's sciatica, sciatica, but surprisingly it's not really a medical condition. Is a medical term used to describe the symptoms (shooting pain, tingling and numbness) caused by a low condition back.

Here is how it happens. Extend the brain nerves in arms and legs to send messages to the muscles or skin. A nerve that leaves the spine to enter in arms or legs is called a peripheral nerve.

Peripheral nerves are packages of millions of nerve fibers that leave the spinal cord and branching out to other parts of the body such as muscles and skin. For example, these nerves make muscles move and enable skin sensation (feeling).

Nerve pill around downtown is usually perceived as radiating down the leg. This means that your sciatica may be caused by a disk bulging or herniated disc, spinal stenosis, pregnancy, a tumor, spinal or vertebral column of infection or trauma.

Any of these conditions can exert pressure on the sciatic nerve or nerve roots linked on your back low. And that the pressure is what causes your pain and other symptoms.

The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain and possibly tingling, numbness or weakness that originates in the back lower and travels through the buttock and the large sciatic nerve at the back of leg.

Good news! Most people who are experiencing sciatica get better over time (usually a few weeks or months) and find pain relief with non-surgical sciatica treatment. For others, the pain may be infrequent and irritating, but has the potential to deteriorate.

While sciatica can be very painful, it is rare that result in permanent damage to the sciatic nerve (tissue damage).

Sciatica occurs more often in people between 30 and 50 years of age. Many times a particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, but pain isquiatico over time tends to develop as a result of General wear on the structures of the lower spine.

As stated earlier, in many cases, sciatica will improve and disappear over time. Initial treatment usually focuses on medications and exercises to relieve pain. You can help relieve pain by:

‧ Avoid sitting (unless it is more comfortable than standing).

‧ Alternating lying with short walks. Increase your foot as you are able to painlessly.

‧ Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (Nsaids) like ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve).

‧ Using a heating pad on a low or medium setting or a hot bath, 15 to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. You can also try an ice pack 10-15 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. There is strong evidence that heat or ice will help, but you can try to see if they help you.

Exercise like swimming, strengthen the muscles that support the back without putting any pressure on him or regulate a sudden jolt, and can prevent and reduce symptoms of sciatica. Yoga or Pilates can help improve flexibility and strength of the muscles. Bad posture can aggravate sciatica. Take steps to improve can relieve pain and swelling:

Permanent

Stand upright with a straight head back and forth. Weight must be balanced evenly in feet and legs kept straight.

Sitting

Sit upright with a carrier as a pillow or rolled towel in small of the back. Knees and hips should be level and feet should be flat on the floor, with the help of a throne if necessary.

Driving

As with session, the back must be properly supported. Correctly position wing mirrors to avoid having to twist the back. Foot controls must be square in front of the feet. If driving long distances, regular breaks should be taken to stretch your legs.

Sleep

Sleeping on a mattress medium (not too tight). The mattress should be sturdy enough to withstand the body supporting the weight of the shoulders and buttocks while maintaining straight column. Support the head with a pillow, but make sure that the neck is not forced up on a steep angle.

Lifting and handling

To avoid injury sciatica, the correct method for lifting and moving objects must be followed.

Additional treatment for sciatica depends on what is causing nerve irritation.

If sciatica pain is severe and not gotten better within six to twelve weeks, it is generally unreasonable to expect column surgery to be recommended by your doctor.

Surgery speeds up resolution of pain. Two years after surgery, however, surgical management and non-surgical has about the same results. Once you're more familiar with can be a valid reason to choose one or the other.

If sciatica is new to you, perhaps the most important thing to do after a rest of days is beginning to do gentle stretching and exercise. This may be the last thing you want to think, particularly when it is even painful just move. Sometimes the best way to start is to do some gentle stretches before you get out of bed. Always ask your health care provider that extends or exercises are best suited for you.

Remember, I am not a doctor. I just sound like one.

Take good care of yourself, and live the best life possible.

Informed pain to get on your latest fashions? Is sciatica?

Compendium definition of sciatica is simple: sciatica is compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, a branch of leading to sciatica or anxiety.

of the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica, the maximum nerve in the body. No wonder we see abnormalities sciatica and anxiety when this delicate nerve sciatica is bad!

Usually the stomach begins between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebra of the vertebral column and extends downwards, wraps around the thigh, extending to the lower part of the ham and then run down the back of the thigh, behind the knee and calf muscles and feet. Even if sciatica patients can occur anywhere along the agony nerve, sciatica usually reveal itself as discomfort extends from the ham into the back of one or both legs.

The pressure on the sciatic nerve can be caused by a number of factors. Mage can be compressed with spinal Stenosis, or a naturally occurring decreases in the opening of the spine. Another reason for sciatica is spinal disc degeneration or herniation, which means the material in a spinal disk leak, causing bones to rub against himself. Spine gets out, causing pressure on the nerve that cause sciatica.

It is important for physicians to take a complete history of the patient to try to find the cause of the patient's sciatica. Diagnosing tests MRIs and CT scans are also positive in diagnose sciatica.

Sciatica is caused by spinal Stenosis and spinal disc herniation or decline treatment usually with surgery. No surgeon can guarantee a 100% successful final result, so that patients should get a second opinion and fully take into account the implications or surgery before they consent to treat sciatica with surgery.

Sciatica usually resolves itself finally and rest periods. Patients can get complete bed rest generally find relief within a few days as sciatica sciatic nerve and have a chance to heal.

Patients with chronic pain who choose not to surgery may wish to explore a variety of options for managing pain. Some patients achieve liberation by recruiting medical weeds, in areas where the treatment is permitted under State law. Other patients manage their discomfort with other alternative remedies, such as diet, exercise, herbal remedies, acupuncture or NLP.
