The Mayo Clinic explains sciatica as pain that travels along the sciatic nerve that runs from the top of the back to the bottom of the leg. "This British Medical Journal study notes that patients have options to avoid surgery. Physical therapy can produce the same results if patients are able to do it with the first six months of pain. "
