Get Relief From Back Pain - The Right Side and Down the Right Leg

Before you can get relief from back pain on the right side or left side of the lower back that tends to run down the butt and back of the legs, you need to know what is causing it. The most common cause of the pain is due to the sciatic nerve being damaged or having pressure place on it from numerous sources such as:

o Herniated discs

o A damaged or bruised Piriformis muscle

o Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (a nerve compression disorder)

And there are a few others.

When the sciatic nerve becomes damaged or has pressure placed on it, it becomes inflamed; this inflammation, is the cause of the pain you feel in the lower part of the back that extends down the leg. Many people use a heating pad to try and get relief from the pain of sciatica but, this is the wrong thing to do as heat only inflames more so, when the heat is removed the pain is usually worse. The reason the heat feels good when applied is because the heat tends to deaden the nerve ending receptors so they are not sending the pain signals to the brain.

Inflammation of the sciatic nerve should be treated, the same as you would treat any injury that involves inflammation such as, a sprained wrist or ankle, you apply cold or ice packs for twenty minutes at a time every two or so hours until the swelling and inflammation subside.

One other thing that can be done to relieve sciatica is stretching exercises some time refereed to as backward extensions. These extensions help to realign the discs and vertebrae in the lower back which, when out of alignment, place pressure on or pinch the sciatic nerve causing the nerve to become inflamed. With the right treatment program you can become pain free and stay pain free by performing the exercises outlined and can be done in just eight to ten minutes a day.

To discover treatment plans, which will work, click here and you can get relief from lower back pain in as little as ten minutes and if you continue with the program after the pain is gone you can keep it from returning.

Acupuncture - An Eastern Approach to the Pain and Discomfort of Back Pain and Sciatica

According to the clever Chinese doctors of ancient times, back pain is caused by factors in the environment, lifestyle and from the internal weaknesses of the human body.

The environment was always viewed as a potential cause of pain & disease in the human body. Today we prefer to see ourselves as more separate from nature, living above & beyond its effects. However, if you walk around on a wet, cold & windy day without proper covering you are more prone to experiencing back pain in the future. The Chinese believe that windy, cold & damp weather can act as pathogens which enter the body and cause pain.

Also, it is believed that the food we eat if too 'damp' in energy can cause back pain by introducing too much fluid and fat tissue into the body which can then settle in areas which block the free flow of blood & energy. Stagnating blood & energy are believed to be the local cause of all pain in the body.

They also believed that the emotions can cause back pain, because extreme emotions can hamper the free flow of energy & blood around the body, potentially causing pain.

A congenital weakness of the back or old age can also be a cause of back pain. With this kind of pain tiredness is often a problem. In this case it is important to strengthen the back as well as relieve pain, otherwise the pain may reappear repeatedly.

Back pain is treated by inserting fine needles into points situated along meridians on either side of the back. Those points which are tender are most likely to be needled. The points used on the back mostly correlate with the sympathetic nervous system ganglions.

Point on the feet & legs are also used as a way of freeing up the circuit of energy & blood within the meridian. This meridian travels around the body from the eye to the little toe, travelling down the side of the back on the way.

Therapies such as Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy are popular treatments for back pain. Acupuncture is less well known as a treatment, however it has a unique ability to reach nerves lying deep within the muscles of the body.

There can be no better way of influencing and pacifying pain in the lower back & sciatic pain in the legs, than by the insertion of metal needles which have a direct influence on the electro magnetic nerve pathways in the body

Acupuncture and Back Pain

Research carried out in 2002 indicated that almost 80% of the world's population would suffer from some kind of back pain with lower back pain being the most common type. In addition to the high rate of incidence, back pain is also known to have a high rate of recurrence in patients. With patients trying everything from over the counter painkillers to physiotherapy to gain relief from back pain, Acupuncture comes as a welcome change.

Acupuncture is a natural method of treatment that involves no chemicals or surgery. Thin stainless steel needles are inserted into the body at various acupuncture points to stimulate the free flow of Chi or life force through the body. Free flowing Chi results in a healthy and pain free body. Large bodies of research have been able to establish a connection between acupuncture and relief from back pain-especially sciatica.

Sciatica refers to a type of back pain in which the pain radiates from the buttocks down the legs. Sometimes, sciatica pain can also be a consequence of a muscle spasm impinging on the sciatica nerve. Acupuncture can be effectively used to alleviate muscle spasms. The results are almost immediate and can provide relief within minutes.

Back pain is generally caused because muscles that are not frequently exercised and stretched are suddenly put to excessive use. Muscle spasms are common in such cases and result in the individual feeling sore, stiff and a dull ache in the back. Patients suffering from sciatica may even feel a tingling sensation or numbness. This is generally due to the narrowing of the disc space or a disc protrusion in the lumbar region.

Acupuncture is used to improve blood circulation to the entire lumbar region and spinal cord. It relaxes paraspinal muscles and provides relief from muscle spasms. The increased blood flow provides greater nourishment to the discs and increases the elasticity and strengthens the spinal cord. Thus, acupuncture can be extremely effective in reducing back pain symptoms. It is important to remember that different patients respond differently to acupuncture sessions and it can take anywhere between 4-12 sessions to really feel the difference.

5 Biggest Back Pain Myths Busted!

If you're like 80% of Americans, you suffer from some sort of back pain. It seems like the more "experts" you see, the more theories and convoluted explanations get thrown at you. Worse yet, 99% of the information coming out of the mouths of these so called "experts" is false. Read on to get the lowdown on what really causes and cures chronic back pain.

Myth #1-Doctors Are Well Trained On Back Pain

NOPE!

Even though chronic pain is the #2 reason someone visits their primary care doctor, doctors typically spend less than 2 days in medical school on it! 2 days is not nearly enough time to learn about this extremely common and debilitating condition. That helps explain why they keep scribbling out prescriptions which do nothing more than mask the symptoms.

Myth #2-Western Medicine Is Good At Treating Back Pain

SORRY!

Perhaps due to the lack of training, the typical old treatments (doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists) are not getting the job done.

In fact, a group of public health experts at John's Hopkins University recently stated: "Despite its high prevalence and the multiple burdens associated with it, low back pain remains poorly understood, inadequately diagnosed, and ineffectively treated."

That statement pretty much sums up what most people experience first-hand.

Myth #3-The Pain Is Caused By Bulging Discs

NOT TRUE!

Way back in 1994, researchers at the University of Washington were rearing up for a study to investigate the cause of back pain. They were especially concerned with bulging discs, as they are commonly diagnosed as a cause of back aches and sciatica.

Their first step was to find people withoutpain so they could compare them to people with pain. What they found... astounded them. They found that over half of the people without back pain had a bulging disc! In their results published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers concluded that bulging (aka herniated) discs in people with pain in the lower back may just be a coincidence.

Myth #4-You Have To Learn To Live With The Pain

WRONG!

Fortunately, there are thousands of people from around the world who have gotten relief from even the worst cases of back pain. Yes, most people are let down with the treatments, but it isn't because there is anything wrong with them-it's the treatments that have failed them! As you know, the typical  treatments are mildly effective at best. The people who have successfully overcome chronic pain have done it by thinking outside the box and trying approaches that counter conventional wisdom.

Myth #5-Back Pain Cannot Be Cured By Diet

FALSE!

This is a big one. Despite the mountain of research supporting diet and nutrition as an extremely effective treatment, this literature gets suppressed by the $200 billion dollar "back pain industry".

Everything in your body, from the hand on your mouse to the eyes reading this screen, are made out of the food you ate-either yesterday or some time ago. Your entire back-the vertebrae, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons, and discs-are all made out of nutrients. Therefore, the quality of the food you eat plays a critical role in how your back functions (or dysfunctions). Putting the right building blocks into your body makes all the difference when it comes to preventing and curing back pain.

The effects of food on pain are not simply long term. Eliminating foods that cause pain and adding foods that relieve pain can make a difference in a matter of days.

Low Back Pain And Sciatica - Should I Rest Or Keep Active?

It's a dilemma faced by many. You have suffered an attack of low back pain or sciatica and do not know whether to rest or keep active. I will now explain the main principles which will help guide you to the right decision.

Fortunately, the days are long gone (with the odd exception) where those suffering with low back pain or sciatica were advised to have bed rest for days on end. This is probably one of the worst things you could do for your pain.

Without doubt, the emphasis is on keeping active. However, this does not mean you need to grin and bear it and soldier on through pain, this could also make things worse. Ultimately, you need to be aware of what your body is telling you and act accordingly.

As the body is healing itself, it is important we do not place too much stress across the injured structures i.e. keep too active, as this will simply interfere with the healing process. I can use the analogy here of trying to run too soon after you have torn a muscle in your leg. If you were to do that, you would not be surprised if you made the injury worse.

However, it is equally important that some stresses are placed across those same structures. This is because the strength of those injured tissues after healing will be related to the stresses they encountered during healing. If all you do is rest your low back/sciatic nerve, the pain may well subside eventually, but it will only be used to 'resting i.e. not doing very much. If you were to then increase the stresses across them significantly afterwards, they may not be able to tolerate this and therefore the potential for re-injury is increased.

Consequently, the important factor here is getting the happy medium between activity and rest.

So how do you know what the happy medium is then?

You listen to your body. If you are placing too much stress across your low back or sciatic nerve, your body will let you know by causing you pain. These pain messages are a warning system for you, that you are not allowing it to heal itself as it would like to. If, however, you allow the body to heal itself by not placing too much stress across the structures concerned, your body will keep quiet and you will perceive no, or very little, pain.

Do not be misled into thinking that it is best to place no, or very little, stress across the injured structures though. As I mentioned above, it is important to place some stresses across them, so they heal stronger.

Therefore, if you have rested and feel your pain is beginning to subside, be sensible, but slowly begin to increase the degree of activity you are performing. If you can do this without aggravating you pain - fantastic, slowly but surely continue to increase your levels of activity as time passes.

If on the other hand, as you begin to increase your levels of activity you feel your pain begin to worsen, you are potentially interfering with the healing process. Therefore ease off back to a level you were comfortable with. Stick with that level for a day or so and then, providing things are going OK, try to gently increase your activity levels again.

As your low back and sciatica nerve become stronger with this approach, it will be important to carry out specific exercises in order to target certain structures. This will enable you to increase strength and improve flexibility. This will result in the pain you are suffering resolving quicker and also the chances of you suffering a repeat recurrence less likely.

Low Back Pain & Sciatica - Getting a Good Night's Sleep

When you are suffering from either low back pain or sciatica, the last thing you want to be doing is laying awake for hours with only the pain for company. Unfortunately that's how it is for many people, especially in the early days when there is still a high degree of inflammation present which is contributing to the pain.

However, it does not always need to be that way. I shall address this very frustrating issue of sleep, or lack of it, to try and help you gain a good nights sleep and to also try and avoid you falling into the trap of thinking you need to replace your bed. Although this can sometimes be the case, it rarely is.

More often than not, if you are struggling to have a good nights sleep, it is likely to be a consequence of either what you have been doing before you went to bed or the position you have been sleeping in while you are in bed which is the problem. I shall be discussing the latter here.

It's difficult to go into great detail, as a lot depends upon what is actually causing you to have low back pain or sciatica in the first place. Nevertheless, there are typically two postures or activities which will tend to aggravate your pain, those being Extension based activities (e.g. leaning backwards) and Flexion based activities (e.g. leaning forwards).

If, when you go to bed, you tend to lie on your stomach and it is extension based activities which aggravate your pain, it is likely your pain is going to be aggravated further during the night. This is because lying on your stomach encourages extension of the lower back. Under these circumstances, I would suggest you try lying on your back of a night (If you do try this, I would also encourage you to place a pillow or two under your knees, because if you keep your legs straight this could also aggravate your pain) or alternatively, place a pillow or two under your stomach if you feel you can only lay on your front

Alternatively, if it is flexion based activities which aggravate your pain and you are lying on you back of a night, this could also lead to a poor nights sleep. This is due to lying on your back encouraging flexion (this is not strictly true, as there are exceptions to the rule. However, for now, we shall take it as true). Under these circumstances, I would suggest you try lying on your front of a night (this time, you may wish to place a small pillow underneath your stomach). Either of these should help you get a better night's sleep.

HOWEVER, if your pain is still quite sensitive, neither of these positions may be very comfortable. When this is the case, I would encourage you to try lying on your side (whichever side you find the easiest) BUT ensure that your top leg is bent slightly at the hip and knee and also supported by a pillow or two. By doing this, it enables your top leg to remain parallel with the bed therefore preventing your leg from dropping down.

It is this 'dropping down' action of the top leg which tends to have a twisting/stretching effect on your lower back and sciatic nerve and will undoubtedly aggravate your pain.

As I mentioned earlier, the sleeping position is just one potential factor which can aggravate your pain at night, but it is a very important one and if you can get this right, a good night's sleep will not be too far away!

Healing Back Pain - 3 Methods That Are Guaranteed to Heal Your Back Pain Starting Right Now!

Back pain is a condition which many adults in the world constantly suffer from. In fact statistics reveal that over eight million adults in the United States of America Suffer from this condition. In the west, statistics show up to 80 percent of adults suffering from back pain.

How do humans feel pain? Well, this occurs as a result of our brain's cell receptors intercepting a message which is transmitted to it by the nerves in the human body. It is the same with back problems - when pain occurs in the back, the nerves in the back transmit the information (pain) to the brain. That is when you feel it!

It is interesting to note that painkillers actually operate by cutting off these messages from getting to your brain by blocking the transmission from the nerves in the area.

Why are we going through all of this talk? Well, it always amazes me that people would rather rely on drugs to do what they, as humans, can accomplish naturally. This article will look at 3 ways in which you can replace the function of pain using your body's natural ability to heal. This will remove any risk of your becoming addicted to any pain killers. Read on...

#1. You need to begin by acknowledging the fact that there exists a very close bond between your back and your mind. This has been shown by experiments which proved that if you harbor negative thoughts like anxiety or fear or depression, relieving your back pain becomes more difficult. Your back muscles interpret the fear or anxiety and become tense in response to it.

To counter this, you need to perform deep breathing exercises to help ease the stress felt by your mind. And also start to practice positive thinking.

#2. You should engage in performing low impact exercise routines if you desire to stop the pain you are experiencing. These exercise routines include the following; aerobics, yoga, tai chi, arm lifts, crunches, leg lifts, and any other light exercise routine which you can manage to perform without the risk of aggravating your back muscles.

The aim of all of these is locomotion - ensuring that your muscles are in constant motion so as to keep them from merging due to immobility. Whatever you do maintain a balance of stretching as much as possible without risking injury to your back. If you feel that you are overdoing anything, stop.

#3. You ought to endeavor to feed yourself correctly and properly. Feed yourself right. You should go for foods that will boost your immune system and allow your body to assume its natural healing tendencies. Foods like the following should be incorporated into your daily diet (not at once, of course); milk, fruits, vegetables, eggs, lean meat, fiber, grains, nuts, and so on and so forth.

FACT: Most conventional treatments for sciatica only work as a temporary band aid solution; they all fail to work in the long run!

Treatment Options For Sciatica Back Pain

Compression of the sciatic nerve causes a group of symptoms which can be quite painful. This pain which starts in the lower back, often radiates down the leg on the affected side to the heel. Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot may progress to muscle weakness and difficulty in controlling or moving the affected limb. Usually one sided, the pain can be debilitating and progressive.  Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. Its roots branch off the spinal cord at the 4th or 5th lumbar vertebrae (L4, L5). Thorough and complete diagnostic tests must be done to identify the cause of the pain. Often a bulging or herniated disc is the cause of the problem. There are 25 vertebrae which make up the spinal column and between each are intervertebral discs. These discs act as cushions, absorbing shock and allowing the spine to twist, turn, and bend. Healthy discs are tough cartilage pads that are thick, flexible, and contain a jelly-like substance. An injury to the back can cause the disc to bulge, rupture or tear, resulting in a herniated disc. When the inner jelly-like material is forced out, the disc gradually flattens, similar to a dry sponge and causes pressure on the nerve.  Treatment is aimed at relieving the inflammation and pain and conservative measures should be tried first. The most effective methods may be a combination of:

Spinal Decompression
Physical Therapy
Chiropractic Treatment
Massage Therapy
Medication including ANSAID drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
Epidural Steroid Injections
Acupuncture and Biofeedback
Electrical Stimulation
Ultrasound Treatment
Surgery as a Last Resort

A treatment method that is gaining favor is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression where recent studies show a 71% to 90% success rate. One study reports that 86% of its participants experienced a complete resolution of their symptoms or an immediate decrease of pain after treatment. Utilizing the DRX 9000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression System, a computerized technology program is formulated to treat the patient's spinal disorder. Through a series of treatments, the spine is gently stretched, slowly drawing the vertebrae apart, gradually reducing the pressure on the affected areas.  Dr. John Leslie, of the Mayo Clinic, presented a study in September 2007 at the annual conference of the American Academy of Pain Management. His study evaluated a group of patients who had suffered more than 10 years of chronic back pain. After two weeks of treatment with the DRX 9000, there was a 50% reduction in the patients' pain. After completion of six weeks of therapy, there was a success rate of 88.9%. As the numbers of patients who are treated successfully with the DRX 9000 grows, it becomes an option that should be considered by those suffering from sciatica and chronic back pain.

What is Causing My Lower Back Pain?

If you are suffering from lower back pain, you should know you are not alone, millions of Americans suffer from this condition every day. How do these millions of people get relief from the pain that, at times can be debilitating? Well, to be honest, most don't, they wait it out just as I have always done after being told by a doctor that bed rest for one to two weeks is the only thing that will help.

I was told that the only way to relief the pain was to not aggravate it any further and the best way to do that was to stay in bed and move around as little as possible. After years of dealing with the pain I decided there had to be away to relief the pain and keep it from returning.

The first thing I discovered was that my lower back pain was being caused by two crushed discs in lower part of my spinal column and when the vertebra where out of alignment my sciatic nerve was getting pinched. When the nerve gets pinched, it becomes inflamed which causes sever pain in the lower back and sometimes extends down the leg.

The second thing I found out was that using a heating pad to relief the pain, sure made it feel better but, after removing the heat the pain was worse so I would reapply the heat just for some relief, turned out to be the wrong thing to do. The right thing to do is to apply cold (ice packs) for about twenty minutes at a time every two hours or so, especially when the lower back pain is first experienced. This is because the pain, 95% of the time is caused by inflammation and heat only inflames more.

The third thing I discovered was that by spending five to ten minutes every morning doing the correct stretching exercises not only helped to relieve my lower back pain but also helped it from returning. These exercises are associated with extension or backward bending which helps keep the spine in alignment.

Discover how you can relieve your lower back pain without doctors, drugs, or surgery click here now and become pain free in less time than you thought possible.

Are You Making These Mistakes With Your Back Pain Or Sciatica?

Attention Severe Back & Leg Pain Sufferers Seeking a Cure for Lower Back Pain...

Common Mistakes Made by Back Pain Sufferers

Thinking it will just go away
Thinking that medicine will fix a damaged disc or spine
Thinking that endless chiropractic adjustments will sooner or later fix the problem
Thinking that more exercises or massages will do the trick
Thinking that steroid injections are safe and can fix the problem
Thinking that your only alternative is surgery
Thinking that all spinal decompression therapy is the same

Your Problem Is NOT Going to Go Away...

Severe low back pain and sciatica caused by stenosis, herniated disk, degenerative disc, bulging disc, ruptured disc, slipped disc, foraminal stenosis, failed back surgery and facet arthrosis will NOT go away on it's own. In fact, these conditions are progressive degenerative conditions that only get worse with time.

The Failure of Old, Traditional Treatments...

These back problems are caused by mechanical damage of the discs and nerves...so medicine and shots cannot possibly repair them. You can't put gas in your car to fix a flat tire.

Chiropractic and physical therapy are great for minor low back pain, but they simply cannot repair a damaged lumbar disc. Same for exercises, massage, acupuncture, etc.

The True Dangers of Shots...

Steroid injections are invasive procedures with all the inherent risks of surgery; infection, nerve damage, allergic reaction, failure. The steroids being injected into your spine are toxic. They cause loss of bone mineralization and weaken the supportive ligaments of the spine. Plus... injections do NOT repair the disc. They simply remove inflammation from the area...temporarily.

A Safer Alternative to Back Surgery...

In the old days, surgery was your only option for disc disease. This is the 21st Century! Advances in computerized medical technology has given us safe, effective and quick methods for repairing damaged discs without surgery. It's called Spinal Decompression or Intervertebral Disc Distraction (IID Therapy)

Beware of Wannabes and So-Called Experts...

Many clinics advertise "spinal decompression," but few actually use true spinal decompression equipment. Some use warmed over older traction machines or roller tables and call them decompression. They aren't. And some decompression machines are inferior in build quality and patient features that make treatment more comfortable. Not all equipment is the same. There's a reason why BMW's and Mercedes cost more than Fords or Nissans. It's in the construction and performance.

And not all doctors providing spinal decompression are the same. Some are just general chiropractors with no specific additional training in orthopedics or disc disease. Some have added spinal disc decompression merely as an additional revenue source to their existing clinics.

True spinal decompression specialists, like Dr Barry L Marks, DC have specialized training in spinal orthopedics and have spinal decompression centers dedicated to back pain and sciatica sufferers.

Acupuncture For Relief of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica - An Ancient Eastern Treatment

Despite the fact that acupuncture may not always provide long term relief, it is accepted that it may often be a source of relief from the immediate symptoms of back pain and sciatica. Really acupuncture should be viewed as being a method of alleviating pain and not thought to be a cure. However it should be remembered that pain relief even without a cure is valuable. It is essential for those who are experiencing serious discomfort or worse, and pain relief in itself may create a helpful climate for a cure by other means.

Acupuncture is now well known and accepted in the west although it is regarded generally as a Chinese therapy. It has been practised by the Chinese for several millennia and has enjoyed considerable success although it has not been claimed by them to be an absolute cure. The fundamentals of the therapy are simple. Sterile thin needles are inserted into the body at strategic places and the practitioner then moves them so as to create the necessary stimulus.

The acupuncture positions are not easy to locate, but are important and so require experience on the part of the therapist. Traditional Chinese medicine relate the acupuncture points to theories of yin and yang upon which the effectiveness of the treatment is explained. However it is most likely that the needles when inserted into the skin help to relieve pain by stimulating the bodies own pain relief mechanisms.

It is generally accepted that in the context of back and sciatica, acupuncture does not amount to a cure. Also it does not always work and there are those for whom it is ineffective. But there are very good grounds for believing that it will probably be a means of giving relief for back related problems. Another point to be considered is that the pain relief is normally longer lasting than typical pain relieving drugs available on prescription. Prescription drugs for pain relief will usually have to be taken again within a few hours. Acupuncture has been shown to have a much better effect and this is a great advantage apart, from the fact also that there is no risk of addiction with acupuncture.

Assuming the acupuncture to work for the particular patient, there is then a realistic chance that the easing of pain achieved will in itself lead to better mobility and this will then encourage a cure naturally. It should be added though, that if the acupuncture treatment does not bring about an indirect improvement as described, then probably future treatments by the therapist will be necessary, perhaps as frequently in some cases as every week. This may prove too costly for some.

Safety and hygiene is an essential for the proper use of acupuncture. The needles should always be sterile and are specifically used only once. If undergoing treatment you should expect that the needles will be in sterile unopened packaging before the therapist starts. You will see that the needles are very thin and for this reason you are unlikely to have any sensation of pain as they are inserted into your skin.

In the past the question has been asked as to whether acupuncture does indeed have the pain relief effect that is claimed. Are the claims for the treatment based on an nothing more than the placebo effect? Inevitably where there is incomplete understanding as to how a treatment may achieve its results doubts may be raised about it. It will be reassuring to know that clinical tests have been able to confirm that acupuncture is a genuine means of pain relief for those suffering from back and sciatica pain. And in comparison with the placebo effect, acupuncture has a much higher success rate.

The difficulty with acupuncture remains that as explained it does not amount to a cure. It may help bring about a cure but not always and repeat visits to the therapist may be required. In terms of pain relief then, acupuncture is well worth trying and it may lead to something better. However anyone suffering from back related problems, for example matters such as a slipped disc, which clearly are not going to be put right just by acupuncture, will wish also to address the underlying problem and to see what can be done to correct the malfunction that has brought it about.

Finally do bear in mind that acupuncture should only be given by those who are fully qualified. This is not something to try at home! And nor should acupuncture be tried by anyone who has a problem with bleeding or a blood disorder. Always consult your medical practitioner before undertaking acupuncture.

Back Pain - Do You Think Bats Suffer From it?

I have been wondering recently, as I see more and more information on the news and in magazines on gravity inversion tables, if bats suffer from back pain. There is quite a bit of logic involved in the concept of pain relief brought about by hanging upside down. Theoretically, I can understand the relief from lower back pain that you may feel when the weight of your body is taken off your spine. Of course, it is a fact of life that the more weight we are carrying, the greater the load on our vertebra and spinal column thus exacerbating general aches and pains into severe back pain.

There are many forms of back pain ranging from back injuries, to sciatica, to fibromyalgia, all of which impact on our body and mind in a different way and require different back pain treatment methods. Visits to the chiropractor, the massage therapist, Bowen therapist, Reki Master, Medical Practitioner, pain management clinic, the list goes on and on.... All of which require time away from home and our money, both of which are precious to us. To be able to find ways of managing our pain within our own environment is certainly worth looking into. There are different back pain exercises available to assist us cope with everyday life. These are available from your physiotherapist, or perhaps your local book store. Sometimes something as simple as going on a diet may help relieve your symptoms.

I am certainly not trying to make light of any pain that you may be experiencing. The devastating effect that pain can have on our physical, mental and spiritual state can be overwhelming to yourself and your family. Chronic back pain can cripple your lifestyle and cause all sorts of personal and social problems. Certainly it is worth investigating and pursuing all avenues that may help give some relief.

I think that bats certainly wouldn't have the complex issues that surround us to deal with each day, however, being able to just hang and chill out certainly has its attractions. For some of our pain management and relaxation therapy it may be worth contemplating becoming bat like and trying inversion therapy.

I have found a website which has a selection of inversion therapy tables available for you to look at. Go to http://www.quickinversiontablereviews.com to get an overview of different tables available to you. Maybe it's just the thing you need.

Low Back Pain, Sciatica and Pinched Nerve Pain - Do You Have Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a condition where for a variety of reasons the spinal canal becomes more narrow. This narrowing can put additional pressure and compression on the spinal cord and can cause a pinching of the nerve roots. If the narrowing is in the lower part of spinal cord it is referred to as lumbar spinal stenosis and if the narrowing is in the upper part of the spinal cord then it is referred to as cervical spinal stenosis. While stenosis can also occur in the thoracic or upper back region, the lumbar and cervical areas are the most common.

Who Gets Spinal Stenosis?

While some people are born with stenosis, most of the time spinal stenosis is seen in people over the age of 50 who already have some disc degeneration just as a consequence of getting older as well as the gradual wearing down on the spine from normal activities. As we get older, our spinal ligaments can calcify, bone spurs may form, and we can get herniated or ruptured discs. All these conditions can lead to a narrowing of the spinal canal which can compress and pinch the spinal nerves.

Spinal Stenosis Symptoms

Symptoms of spinal stenosis can include back pain radiating to the legs, numbness or pain in the buttocks that worsen when walking or exercising, leg weakness, decreased physical endurance, loss of balance, and leg and neck pain.

Spinal Stenosis Treatments

In general doctors tend to take a conservative approach when initially treating spinal stenosis. Drug therapy such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling are usually prescribed first, along with bed rest and reduced physical activity. Steroid injections can also be use to help reduce swelling although the pain relief is normally temporary.

Traction and spinal decompression may be prescribed, along with physical therapy which can be used to help increase flexibility as well as build endurance.

If the pain is acute, then surgery may be needed in order to widen the spinal canal and to correct the conditions that are contributing to the nerve compression.

Some of the surgical procedures used to treat spinal stenosis are:

Decompressive laminectomy. This is used for treating lumbar spinal stenosis and involves removing the top of the vertebra to create more space for the nerves.

Laminotomy. This is a partial removal of the lamina which can be done to widen the spinal canal and relieve compression on the nerve roots.

Foraminotomy. Removal of bone, scar tissue, or other obstructions that are compressing the nerve root exiting the spinal canal.

Due to the risks involved, many doctors will resort to surgical treatments only after non-surgical treatments have been tried first.

This article is not meant to replace the sound advice of a personal physician. Patients should discuss with their doctor all their treatment options before taking any medical course of action.

There Are Many Treatment Options For Your Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common reasons that people go to the doctor or miss work days. About four out of five people will have lower back pain disrupt their daily activities at least once during their lives. Most back pain can be prevented with proper physical exercise and stretching, and if prevention fails, usually simple home management and treatment with help heal the back pain after a few weeks.

Back pain is most often the cause of strained muscles or ligaments from heavy or improper lifting, or a sudden or awkward movement. Another cause of back pain may be structural problems such as a bulging or ruptured disk. Disks are the cushions between the vertebrae in your spine. Sometimes the soft material inside the disk might bulge or rupture and press on a nerve. If a bulging or herniated disk presses on a main nerve that travels down your leg, it may cause sciatica, which is a sharp, shooting pain, tingling, or numbness that travels from the lower back and down the large nerve in the back of the leg. Another structural problem that can cause back pain is arthritis. Arthritis in the spine can lead to spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord.

Any skeletal irregularities, such as a curve in your spine in an abnormal way can cause major back pain. Scoliosis is a condition in which your spin curves over to one side, and it may cause severe back pain. Compression fractures of your spine's vertebrae, also known as osteoporosis, can occur if the bones become brittle and porous, and this may also cause back pain.

There are many risk factors that could increase your chances of developing lower back pain. They include:

-     Obesity

-     Older age

-     Smoking

-     Physically demanding work, or a very stressful job

-     Anxiety or depression

-     Female gender

You should seek a doctor's care if improvement of your back pain does not occur after 72 hours of rest or home self care. If the condition worsens, is constant or intense, especially at night time, spreads down both legs, causes weakness, numbness or tingling in the legs, causes bowel or bladder problems, or is accompanied by any other physical ailments, you should see your doctor immediately. You should also see your doctor immediately if you are over 50 years of age and are experiencing back pain for the very first time.

Back Pain Treatment - What Is the Best Method to Get Relief?

Back pain, in one form or another, affects around 80% of all people at some point or another in their lives. It can be very disturbing and it can interfere with one's ability of performing daily activities. There are many causes for pain in the back, from an injury or a strain to chronic diseases like arthritis or osteoporosis. Back pain treatment usually involves taking pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs, but these synthetic pills, if taken for long, can induce unpleasant side-effects. Alternative treatments methods are also available, like massage, acupuncture, yoga or even medication. There are also many natural back pain treatments that one can use for obtaining relief. Keep in mind that whatever you choose for alleviating your pain, you have to take into consideration the primary cause of it.

Back pain treatments based on natural ingredients and herbs include -

1. Devil's claw - It is one of the most efficient back pain remedies due to the anti-inflammatory substances it contains. Take a few capsules a day, as needed. It should be used cautiously by people who are taking blood thinning medication because it also has a blood thinning effect.

2. Willow - It is also known as a natural aspirin. It has the same effect and it doesn't upset your stomach in any way.

3. Red pepper - It contains capsaicin, a powerful ingredient offering back pain relief. You can either buy a capsaicin cream or make your own at home, mixing smashed red peppers into a white cream until it turns pink.

4. Wintergreen oil - If massaged on the painful area, it has the same effect as capsaicin.

5. Rumatone Gold oil - Used externally, provides quick relief and it is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. If taken with rumatone gold capsules work faster.

6. Black cohosh - It has anti-inflammatory properties and it reduces the muscular tension in the low back and in the neck area. It is also effective in sciatica, another condition causing severe back pain due to the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

7. Dong Quai - Also known as angelica, it is more powerful than aspirin in reducing pain and inflammation.

8. Horse chestnut - It is effective in treating backache caused by chronic conditions like rheumatism or arthritis.

9. Kava Kava - It is an efficient pain killer and, if you are also taking synthetic analgesics, it enhances their action. It has no side effects and it doesn't induce addiction.

10. Bromelain - It is a compound found in pineapple and it can deal with serious inflammation. It also accelerates healing.

Causes of Back Pain to Treatments - Things You Need to Know

There is an array of causes of back pain. The most common cause for it, is from lifting improperly or too heavy of items. However, stretching or trying to reach for something can also cause severe back pain. Traumatic injury to the back from an accident can be another cause.

Treating back pain can be done with exercises and or medication. However, there is the possibility there is more than a muscle strain. There are many conditions that can cause the condition as well. For example, sciatica, slipped disc and even kidney infections. Your root cause for the back pain will be a large factor in the treatment regimen your doctor uses to relieve the pain.

Before your back pain can be treated, the cause for the pain should be pinpointed whenever possible. In some circumstances the cause is nearly impossible to determine. However, if the cause of the pain can be determined it can be beneficial in finding a successful course of treatment.

For example, if the cause for your pain was due to lifting, your doctor will more than likely treat you with medication, stretching exercises, rest and suggest better methods for lifting. Generally, the best way to lift something is by bending your knees and lifting with your knees instead of your back.

If the pain is caused from an injury, your doctor will likely run some tests to determine if you have nerve damage, a slipped disc or something of that nature. It is possible you will need surgery to repair the damage and alleviate the pain. In some cases, if there has been a traumatic injury, depending on the severity of the injury, traction, a brace, medication or surgery might be the course of treatment utilized by your doctor.

Keep in mind, a surgical procedure is usually a last resort treatment. There are several medications both prescription and over the counter that can be used to reduce the back pain. In some patients, a doctor might determine an injection into the nerve with medication is necessary.

Although the causes of back pain can vary, the treatments usually all start the same, with the exception of serious injury to the spinal cord. Your doctor will consider your overall health and your medical history when determining the course of treatment that will best work for you.

Back Pain From Muscle Imbalances

What I have discovered in practice is that there are usually only one or two main groups of muscles, setting up the imbalances that cause the joint to move or the pressure to build up in a muscle making the joint stiff or tight and painful to use.

If the muscles that set up the imbalances (usually the deeper structural muscles) are worked on correctly, the pressure that causes the twist, tilt or tightness is released, along with the pain.

When a back develops problems it is not normally something that has just happened but rather the result of a buildup of imbalances over time. It tends to involve the whole body in some way and therefore requires a holistic approach to get a lasting cure.

To demonstrate, reach to the right to pick something up and you'll notice it is not just your shoulder and arm that moves, you will feel every muscle in your body adjust in some way to support that movement.

Any therapist who doesn't get their hands onto the muscles and body regularly, which lets face it is most of them including a doctor, physiotherapist, chiropractor, acupuncturist, Pilates or yoga instructor, personal trainer etc, is severely handicapped right from the start when it comes to successfully treating back pain.

There is no way, without the vital information you get from the feel of the body, they could devise the best way of approaching a particular person's back problem, or diagnose it correctly for that matter. In one hour you can significantly change how a person feels within themselves, simply by making a significant change to the muscle imbalances in their body and how those muscles feel to the touch.

The body will respond to the right touch as if it knows what is good for it, just as it will freeze up and resist the wrong treatment as a way of protecting itself. Have you ever gone for an adjustment from a chiropractor and had trouble relaxing?

When seeking out treatment for your back pain you need to tune into your body and instinctively you will know what is helping you and what isn't.

A large number of people can't afford to spend several hundred dollars on the medical merry go round hoping they would find someone who could help them.

I felt that if people were well educated on diagnosing their own problem and had effective techniques they could use daily at home to make progress on their own, they would get much better value from the therapy appointments they had and more importantly, they'd be able to recognize very quickly when a therapist they saw was going to be a waste of their money and time.

Back Pain Solutions Without Tears - Surgery Not Required!

Hello and welcome. In this article we will be discussing back pain solutions and how you can get them without tears, and definitely without the use of surgery.

Back pain can occur due to a lot of conditions including, but by no means limited to, the following; a herniated disc (which is also know as a slipped disc, a ruptured disc, a bulging disc, or a protruded disc), a pinched nerve, an injury (for example an automobile accident), wrong posture (especially if you are always using the computer without proper back support), and so on and so forth.

Back ache is almost an unavoidable part of many people's lives but the great news is that back pain solutions also exist to help counteract their occurrence.

=> Number 1 - Exercise...

To prevent further damage to your back and relieve the current pain you feel, you should engage in strengthening exercise routines. You can perform these types of exercises by placing your hands on your hips, then leaning backward gently and gradually.

You should engage in this exercise routine for about 30 minutes and try to be consistent in performing them daily to relieve your back problem.

Another type of back pain solution you might want to try is Chiropractics...

=> Number 2 - Chiropractics...

This technique involves visiting with a chiropractor who will perform a spinal manipulation procedure on you to relieve your back ache via the use of specialized machines.

Not comfortable with Chiropractics, then you may prefer physical therapy...

=> Number 3 - Physical Therapy...

Physical therapy involves the use of special equipment to cure your back problems. These special equipments are used to provide you with much needed support as you perform certain exercise routines which the physical therapist will recommend.

These exercises may include the use of certain therapeutic balls for balancing your back muscles. Alternatively, you may decide to augment your diet with foods supplements that are proven to help with your pain...

=> Number 4 - Diet...

Incorporating food supplements that are known to provide back pain solution into your daily diet is a smart and simple, yet effective way to combat your malady.

These food supplements include; vitamin C, devil's claw, white willow bark and so on. They all contain natural, anti-inflammatory agents that help to increase bone and joint health.

Other ingredients that you should incorporate into your food include; garlic, capsaicin (that is, cayenne pepper), glucosamine-chondroitin, etcetera.

=> Number 5 - Acupuncture...

Very popular in the Eastern part of the world, acupuncture is one of the known back pain solutions that can be used to reduce back ache. It does this by causing your body to release neurochemicals which helps it to self heal.

FACT: Most conventional treatments for back pain only work as a temporary band aid solution; they all fail to work in the long run!

Back Pain & Sciatica Triggers

When we move, especially doing vigorous exercise, we exert a force which should be carried evenly throughout our whole body. But as a result of even a minor imbalance it that force is distributed unevenly throughout our muscles causing compensations and the imbalance to spread deeper into the body, especially when the body is unhealthy or weak and holds onto its tension. The result is often back pain or sciatica.

Even though at any one time most people have imbalances and therefore the potential to injure themselves it will generally only become a problem and end up a pain episode for people who push themselves beyond their physical limits through such things as an accident, or overuse in their job, sport or lifestyle.

Bending over at that particular angle to pick something up off the floor can be just a bit too much stretch for a muscle in the back that was already too tight and too weak to support the weight or pressure you were putting on it.

This movement can cause the muscle to go into spasm, (a permanent state of contraction) and become irritated at the point where it attaches to the bone. Alternatively it can upset the alignment of a vertebrae causing pressure on a disc.

A good example of this is when a person strains muscles across their lower back by lifting something fairly heavy into or out of their car. The erector spinae muscles (the supporting muscles that run either side of the spine) are often tight already and therefore weak and so the action of trying to support a weight out in front of the body is too much strain on them and they go into spasm.

When receiving treatment, attention normally focuses on the area where the pain is felt. The problem muscles that are causing the pain are left in the locked up condition resulting in a person feeling their back pain every time they sit or bend forward. Sitting and bending requires the erector spinae muscles to relax and lengthen but they are in spasm so they can't. In time the locked up muscles become weaker through a lack of circulation and function and the pain becomes more chronic.

Back Pain: What Do You Know About Your Spine

Although people suffering back pain know the spine is most important in maintaining and managing their pain, they are unclear about how important it is. A strong spine and back muscles that contribute to good posture can make go a long way towards avoiding back pain. If you are suffering from back pain you will want to learn about the spine, what it does and how it works.

The spinal column is a major part of the core strength needed to help avoid back pain. It serves to support the trunk of the body. It allows us to bend over, turn from side to side and sit and lie down. The several small bones in the spine are called vertebrae and they are stacked on top of each other in the spinal column.

How many times have you heard others talk about the disc problems in their back? The gel-like substance that is found between the vertebra is called a disc. What is the main function of the disc? To absorb shock from movement of the body and to keep the vertebra separated and not touching one another. Ligaments hold each of the vertebra together.

Each vertebra has a hole on the top and when stacked on top of each other, they form a tube for the spinal cord. These vertebrae protect the spinal cord which is made up of nerve tissue. What does the spinal cord do? It carries the messages sent by your brain to your various body parts telling them to perform certain functions thus performing a vital function for mobility and bodily sensation.

There are three main areas of the spine. Starting at the top, we find the cervical spine which is located in the upper part of the back. The thoracic spine is located in the middle part of the back and the lumbar spine in the lower back. The lumbar spine carries most of the body's weight and can help explain why we often experience pain in our lumbar region first. Some estimates say that nearly 80% of American men and women will experience lower back pain sometime in their lives.

Spinal disorders can be degenerative, often the result of injury. As we all aware, damage to the spinal cord can create many serious problems, including paralysis. Most back pain is acute, meaning it will resolve within one to six weeks. If, however, it lasts longer than three months, it can be considered chronic and will require some treatment intervention.

Researching and learning about how your back and spine work will help you to better understand your back pain and lead you to proper treatment.

If the severe back pain you are feeling whether on the left side or the right side is radiating downward through your buttocks and down the back side of the leg then, you are most likely suffering from sciatica.

Following are three things that may help you ease the pain.

1. When the pain first occurs, use ice packs on the affected area for fifteen to twenty minutes once every two hours or so for the first 24 - 48 hours.

The initial onslaught of the pain is generally caused by inflammation and cold helps reduces inflammation where as heat makes it more severe.

2. Avoid sitting as this compresses the spine, and if the sciatica is being caused by herniated or ruptured discs, then sitting will only make it worse. Try laying on the floor with a pillow under the lower back to stretch the spine backwards. This should help ease some of the pressure on the discs and sciatic nerve.

Another position that may help is lying on your side with a pillow between the knees. Both these positions should also be used when sleeping.

3. As painful as it may be, short walks can help to ease spinal compression which can be causing the pressure on the discs and sciatic nerve. Walk short distances and take a rest, avoid sitting when resting stand or lay down.

Walk a few short yards around the house then lay on the floor, couch, or bed with a pillow under the lower back when resting.

These are only three things that may help ease the pain, there are other things you can do to rid yourself of severe back pain as well as things you that can be done to help prevent it in the future.

Sciatica and Back Pain - What is the Real Cause?

As tightness builds up in a muscle due to poor circulation, that muscle becomes weak causing other muscles to have to compensate or carry the weight for it. These other muscles then start to overwork, fatigue and tighten up and the odds become higher that one of the joints in the spine will be put under an uneven pressure which will end up causing impingement, pain and inflammation.

The muscle imbalances that set all this up will usually be the underlying problem yet they are rarely considered or treated by most Doctors and therapists.

These imbalances can be confined to one area such as the back or shoulders, or spread throughout the whole body causing a pattern of tight muscles and pressure that eventually leads to weakness and pain.

Some treatments you get for pain will exercise and stretch you until your body compensates sufficiently that your pain goes away but it doesn't remove the imbalances, it just covers them up. You lose flexibility and have a negative effect on the circulation and strength in the body.

When we move, especially doing vigorous exercise, we exert a force which should be carried evenly throughout our whole body. But as a result of even a minor imbalance it is distributed unevenly throughout our muscle system causing compensations and the imbalance to spread deeper into the body. Especially when the body is unhealthy or weak and holds onto its tension.

Even though at any one time most people have imbalances and therefore the potential to injure themselves it will generally only becomes a problem and ends up a pain episode for people who push themselves beyond their body's limits through such things as an accident, or overuse in their work, sport or lifestyle.

Bending over at that particular angle to pick something up off the floor can be just a bit too much stretch for a muscle in the back that was already too tight and too weak to support the weight or pressure you were putting on it.
