Spine specialists ProRehab deliver hands-on, manual physiotherapy to help patients to reduce or eliminate pain sciatica and avoid surgery. A recent study by the British Medical Journal CITES that patients who had spinal surgery to treat sciatica had only short-term back pain relief. After six months, patients who had surgery for sciatica felt any different than patients who received only physical therapy.

The Mayo Clinic explains sciatica as pain that travels along the sciatic nerve that runs from the top of the back to the bottom of the leg. Sciatica usually ends quickly, but in some patients remains. The British Medical Journal study, patients had the option to start physical therapy or surgery. Patients who had surgery showed improvement for a short period of time after surgery. But for six months and up to two years after surgery, there was no difference between groups with surgery and those who didn't.

"Patients need to know that surgery is not your only option for treating pain associated with sciatica," says Bethany Richerson, PT, DPT, OCS, a physical therapist ProRehab in Henderson, Kentucky. "This British Medical Journal study notes that patients have options to avoid surgery. Physical therapy can produce the same results if patients are able to do it with the first six months of pain. "

The study States that, since the early benefits of surgery, went through six months patients of sciatica well-informed and non-medical, must decide if they have surgery. The results of this study suggest that the expensive treatments for back pain, such as surgery, may not be the best choice for patients. Options such as physiotherapy at ProRehab often times are the best choice for patients with back pain. ProRehab patient comments about your experience in therapy, "" ProRehab physical therapy has made a difference in pain isquiatico relaxing I experienced over the past few years. "

"Several studies show that the first physiotherapists treatments such as exercise and therapy hands-on, offer big benefits to patients," explains Richerson. "Patients see the best results of physiotherapy for back pain are sure to come see us soon. The worst thing to do is wait until the back pain develops in leg pain and becomes a long-term condition. "

When asked about the most memorable experience which took place during the sessions of therapy at ProRehab, a recent Evansville, Indiana patient replied, "will not be able to walk, sit or stand without pain to start my life all around.
